As most of the members of Joynture know, I have a pretty active life outside of work. I spend a lot of time with friends and family, playing sports, trying new outdoor activities (i.e. surfing) and going on as many trips as possible. What I fail to do consistently but love just as much, if not more than the list of activities above, is volunteering.
Tonight I will be volunteering through NY Cares for a program at VISIONS creating crafts with adults who are blind or have low vision. I have never had a bad experience volunteering. To be honest, I often think that I get more out of volunteering than the people and communities I help do. And as i was sharing this with a few members today, the common response was something along the lines of, “I should volunteer.” Well, you can!
There are countless opportunities for everyone to get involved helping the community. New York Cares is one great way to get involved without needing to commit every X day of the week for the next year. I know this is what often scares people about volunteering. Also, if you’re not into working with adults, you can work with children. If you don’t like working with people at all, there are opportunities to work with animals. The variety of opportunities to volunteer is endless and NY Cares helps you find the right fit.
Here are some other ways to get involved in our community:
Happy volunteering and remember that every bit counts! Pay it forward.
