Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. showed the world universal truth and compassion. It’s only fitting, then, that we honor his memory by celebrating an incredible legacy and keeping his message at the front of our thoughts. MLK day falls on Monday, January 18th this year, although the activist’s birthday was actually January 15th.

Now more than ever, we as Americans should listen to the teachings of King and do what we can to implement them into our daily lives. Consider this:

“I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality… I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.”

So how does NYC celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Jan 18, and how can you participate?

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service: Coastal Cleanup – If you feel like the day should be spent giving back to the community, here is a perfect opportunity! Spend MLK Day with the Stewardship Team at Idlewild Park maintaining the property by removing floating debris. Volunteers will receive instruction on the process and effective cleanup techniques by the team. Volunteers should wear warm clothes and boots, keeping in mind that the attire will probably get a little dirty. Click here to register a spot with the Stewardship team!

Brooklyn Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 2016 – Those seeking an artistic celebration on MLK day should look to the Brooklyn Academy of Music, which will host an ample event in honor of the legendary activist. The evening will feature vocal performances by Kimberly Nichole as well as the Brooklyn Interdenominational Choir. The tribute will also show a screening of The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution and will host a book signing by scholar and author Michael Eric Dayson in addition to an art exhibition. Admission to the event is free!

MLK Day at the Grace Reformed Church of Flatbush – Families and neighborhood friends will come together the Grace Reformed Church of Flatbush on the morning of Jan. 18 for a day of fun and activities. Greenlight bookstore has partnered with the Prospect Lefferts Gardens Neighborhood Association (PLGNA) to celebrate the holiday and “fosters literacy and awareness of the Civil Rights Movement among youth and their families.” The event will include vocal performances and dance performances as well as appearances by children’s authors Selina Aiko and Sean Qualls. Admission is free and the event runs from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
